Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today the student and I did some more practice reading passages. Her accuracy in answering the question is quite good. We are now working on her speed. In order to ensure that she finishes the critical reading section, it is best if she reads the passages in about 3-4 minutes. That way, she'll have time to answer questions accurately. Today we did some timed readings with questions and timed readings without questions. I am confident that once she gets used to timing, she will improve her performance dramatically!"
"The student and I worked through the first 20 multiple choice questions on the practice AP chemistry exam. We identified several topics she needs to go back and review, and talked about strategies for approaching problems. She is doing great. We will continue to take practice tests together and review topics until the test."
"Reviewed for an up coming test, discussing Geometric subjects like volume, surface area, and ratios of similar figures. She showed improvement in finding ratios and understanding how to find the volumes and areas of composite figures."
"The student had a 10 question test that he did not do as well as he liked on. The teacher offered a retake of certain questions of the test: 1,4,6,8, and a wildcard problem of the remaining ones. We went through each of the problems covering: -creating a formula for volume of an object -exponential decay (and talked generically about exponential growth) -Went over Pert equation -talked about taking limits both experimentally and via formulaic method -went over definition of derivative and used the limit to find them -went over examples of rationalizing a term to find proper limits/factors/cancellations"
"I talked her through running an ANOVA and a multiple regression in SPSS. We discussed the output and what things we are looking for. She is going to run the rest of the analysis and then we will discuss her results."
"The student has moved on to new vocabulary and the verb "estar" in Spanish class. She seems to have done well with memorizing the meanings and conjugations but has more trouble applying them and interpreting directions on homework and quizzes. We focused on ways to use context to tell what a question is asking and paying attention to clues in the directions."
"The student was very prepared for this session and already had a list of questions ready and waiting for me when I arrived. She had read through her entire science review packet and picked out specific topics that she wanted me to review with her. After covering those topics we moved onto math. We worked a few problems from old tests as well as some randomly selected problems from her exam review packet. Our next session is scheduled for Wednesday, December 12 at 6:30 pm."
"The student and I covered a wide range of topics in our first session. We talked about free trade and its benefits, property rights, national saving, and examined briefly the market for loan-able funds. He seems to take well the material after a good explanation and I think he certainly has a solid knowledge now of the topics we covered."
"I went over the student's previous math assignments and reviews. I think he is very bright and has no problem with content, he just needs to continue to work on going slower and reading the directions more carefully. Hopefully we can come up with some tricks and skills to master to help him pay closer attention!"
"We went through "Molly Session 4" problem set. We will continue to emphasize math for the next few sessions. HW: Do problem set "Molly HW For Session 5.""
"We went over some of the homework problems in graphing and were able to finish the graphing without any problems, using the methods we have used from taking limits at the extreme points (such as asymptotes) and taking the first and second derivatives. The problems given in the homework were also relatively easy so finishing the homework problems were not a problem at all for him. We were able to move into the introduction of optimization problems. We went over a few examples and ended the session there. There were no particular concerns for this session."
"I had him do a practice test math section before our session - he's at a very good standing now but still needs work on harder geometry and variables. He's very quick to understand why he got a problem wrong, but I'm having him review the test again after I leave to make sure he can still do the problems when I'm not there. I left him with 5 practice tests with variables. I'm planning on covering English with him next time."
