Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We discussed the student's writing assignment. We read an article and I helped her answer the questions and organize her thoughts, then she wrote a summary of the article."
"The student worked hard on his applications, and we worked on his LA essay on the Odyssey. He is making great progress on his writing. He will keep working on the Middlesex essay for next time!"
"During our first session together, the student and I began by taking a look at his writing. Initially, we reviewed a short essay he had typed up detailing the social class structure of Mesopotamia and Ancient Egypt. We soon transitioned, however, to an essay he was writing for history class on different aspects of Mesopotamian and Ancient Egyptian culture. The task was to compare and contrast, identifying both similarities and differences, all within a five paragraph essay. The majority of my time with him was spent helping him refine his thesis for this essay so that it was more logical and engaging. My hope is that with more time, he will begin to see the rationale for constructing a thesis in a non-arbitrary fashion."
"During today's session we reviewed some concepts in math that the student was not understanding. Afterwards we did some essay writing. He showed his creativity today with the great ideas he produced."
"Before we started our session, the student reported that she earned a B+ on her "Macbeth" paper, which made her very happy because her English teacher rarely gives any A grades. Today, the student and I reviewed notes and concepts for her upcoming test on "Frankenstein." Since she clearly understood the events, characters, symbolism, themes, and overall concepts of the novel, we talked about some of the larger literary and philosophical ideas Shelley presents in this work. In particular, we discussed the parallels of fate and tragedy in "Frankenstein," "Macbeth," and "Oedipus Rex.""
"I did not bring my list of words from our previous session, so we started with some reading and made a new list of difficult words which will be merged with the old one for the next class. We worked on reading difficult words and similar words to those words. The student is getting faster and more fluent with her reading, and also more confident with every lesson. She is making great progress."
