Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student already turned in the assignment we were working on. He has not received it back yet. I reviewed his journal. He writes very well, beyond a fourth grade level. In his writing, we reviewed using the correct tense throughout a paragraph. We also reviewed being concise and proper comma usage. We worked a little on writing a speech. Instead of writing a speech, he wrote about writing a speech. I gave him some worksheets on past, present, and future tense verbs since that has been a little difficult for him. He did well. Because his school project assignment assigns a large amount of points to writing a summary, we reviewed how to properly write a summary. Summaries must not include opinions. We did 2 worksheets on fact vs. opinion. He struggled a little on the first one. We discussed the sentences he got incorrect, and he asked questions for clarification. I then gave him the second worksheet and he earned a 100%. *** After the session was over, his father requested that at the beginning of each session in the future that I ask him to let me know what happened at school during the week. His father also mentioned that he would like him to begin writing a longer paper, rather than focusing on challenging topics as we have been doing. I plan to check in with him weekly about school and we will begin writing a paper. I told him I could guide him through the process or he could write a rough draft and we would go over it next week."
"During this session the student and I worked on writing descriptively. I gave him a prompt which asked him to describe a his favorite place and discuss why it was his favorite. I told him I wanted a minimum of six sentences. He wrote about New York City and did a good job of describing it. He is getting better at collecting his thoughts and putting them into words. We then read two more chapters in the chapter book. At the end I quizzed him on some spelling words. I ended the session with the homework assignment of writing an essay about his favorite video game and why it was his favorite. I am trying to pick topics that interest him in order to get him excited about writing. Overall, the session went well."
"We wrote a news-style story for her writing class that modernized the fairy tale "The Princess and the Pea." We also made revisions to the first three paragraphs of her Julius Caesar paper."
