"The student and I discussed the cutting and pasting she did to prep for our meeting and talked about arrangement for her essay."
"We worked on parts of speech, which the student has learned before, but which he's forgotten -- I think it's important to have this review, since it's common for middle school English curricula to include complex grammar concepts -- concepts that even adults have difficulty recalling. We worked on the idea that in most sentences, you need a noun and a verb, and that there are different types of nouns and verbs - not just people/ places/ ideas or actions, but also ideas, states of being, helping verbs, etc. Knowing this will help him understand how not to write a sentence fragment, for instance, or deciding what a sentence needs in order to express an idea he has. Next week, I'd like to continue working on sentences, in a structured way -- we'll drill more, and I'll ask him to create sentences by creating and then using word banks. This will be good for his vocabulary, too. We could even move into paragraphs with those word banks. This week, he did a good job wrapping his head around a variety of different parts of speech."
"Helped the student revise an in-class argumentative essay, focusing on stating her thesis clearly and organizing paragraphs to better develop her argument."
