"We covered chi-squared test for independence and homogeneity. The student wanted help distinguishing between the meaning of the two, even though the calculation is the same. We also discussed surveys, experiments, and observational studies in more detail. She spent some time recently with her statistics instructor going over her final and studying the material she missed last semester."
"We covered sampling and reviewed some homework assignments that dealt with statistical graphics, summaries, and descriptive statistics."
"Learned SPSS descriptive function and compare mean function. Student needs to understand basic statistics theory and concepts so that student can understand the purpose of each SPSS function. We will continue to review the assumptions in each statistics method, like Z-test, t-test, and ANOVA."
"As the student's class keeps moving through geometry using trigonometry, he is getting used to the plug and chug style his teacher is using. In this method, he is given functions that work to find area or missing lengths/angles of triangles. Today we went over a bit of his homework but then moved along onto using the law of sines and cosines. His teacher hasn't truly gone over this material yet, so we went over their definitions and when or when not to use them. We looked at these formulas closely and I worked through deriving them with him. His understanding of when to use them for which sets of information is still not all there, but with more practice I think he will do better. Next time we meet I'd like to work on his understanding of this as well as delving deeper into the meaning behind these functions. This will require him to manipulate trigonometric functions and practice more advanced algebra, which is where I believe he needs more work."
"In this session, he solved multiplication and addition of decimals. He was able to solve them correctly. I left him with volume questions to help with cubic centimeters. He questioned when he didn't understand. He had a test on the Big G. We worked out some possible exam questions."
"She is working on finding the area and circumference of a circle. They've mostly been finding area and circumference from the diameter or radius, but I challenged her to take it a step further by finding the diameter or radius from a given area or circumference. She's starting to get the more advanced problems but could use some more practice. I've given her a worksheet to complete before our next session on Friday."
