Today we reviewed the student's homework on order of operations. We talked about starting on the left and completing multiplication and division first. Then addition and subtraction are able to be completed again starting on the left. On the back side, we worked on order of operations using parentheses. Lastly, we worked on the properties of multiplication in her new workbook for review.

The student and I edited his latest essay on Hatchet. After going over adverbs and adjectives, we also began working on his essay on the Revolutionary War Stamp Act. After writing each sentence, we discussed how we could add more detail with adverbs and adjectives.

This session focused on additional SSAT tutoring for Emma. Her parents want me to focus solely on reading comprehension going forward to pull up her score in that area when she takes the test again in January. We used a variety of reading comprehension exercises, and I gave her a set of passages that were slightly above her grade level to see if she could manage them. Most of the questions she got wrong on the upper level passages were higher order questions, so I think she has a good grasp of being able to sort out main ideas and find details, even when faced with harder material.

Tutoring review by Angela in Calabasas, CA
We worked on mostly math-quantitative analysis questions. Mostly the student is very good at getting the correct answer. There were a couple of tough questions that he spent too long on. So we talked about strategies to answer the question and move on, ways to find the correct answer by the process of elimination. If he focuses and pays attention to details in the questions and the answers given to him, he will do very well. A few times he has had the correct answer and has second guessed himself; we talked about in that instance, going with his first instinct and just moving on.

We extended the session to be a bit longer then usual in order to get the student completely caught up in class. For the first half of the session we looked at parallel and perpendicular lines. During the second half of the session we went over wavelengths and the electromagnetic spectrum.

Tutoring review by Craig in Calabasas, CA
We covered the 1st and 2nd fundamental theorems of Calculus, doing integrals and definite integrals. It's early, and the student seemed like he knew what he was doing. His attitude was good, so I just advised him to keep this as simple as possible for his own sake; the material is difficult enough.
