Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"My fifth GRE tutoring session with the student went well. We started by reviewing the analysis of an argument essay and the analysis of an issue essay that she completed. For the analysis of an argument, the student wrote a comprehensive essay identifying the argument, the assumptions, and the flaws. For the analysis of an issue, I encouraged her to include concrete examples to provide more support for her thesis. Then we worked through verbal reasoning questions in the GRE study guide. She feels more confident in her ability to find the correct answers for the sentence equivalence and text completion questions. However, she is now feeling more challenged by the reading comprehension questions. As we reviewed the answers, she better understood how to look for assistance in the passage and come up with her own answers first. For our next tutoring session, the student will complete section 4 of practice test #2 in the GRE guide along with the analysis of an issue essay and an analysis of an argument essay in practice test #1. She will also continue to practice her vocabulary by using her GRE flash cards and creating definitive sentences with those words."
"Since she has already done a great deal of prep for the test, including taking an exam already, we discussed where she felt her weaknesses were, specifically in the math. I gave her some problems to diagnose different possible issues with the testing itself since she seems to have a solid foundation for the math, and we discovered that there are a few specific testing issues. We also discussed her strategy and how it could be improved, as well as testing anxiety and how to overcome it. I am suggesting she tone down her preparation because I think she's overloading herself with the math. I have instead suggested she work on 3 problems a day rather than 20 problems a day. We will also work on finding the simplest possible route to solving the problem, much of which will involve identifying the specific problem types."
"We began by reviewing some basics of equation solving based on the worksheet I gave the student. We then reviewed several arithmetic problems. We worked on more algebra (basic distribution of groups, multiplying both sides by groups). I assigned a subset of c.8 in the test prep book based on this. We worked on the basic syntax of percents after this. I assigned the block of problems from 6-21 in chapter 12. Also, I assigned 1-25 of the text completions."
