Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Student A enjoyed telling me made-up stories and jokes and "collecting evidence" as he read "Zita the Spacegirl." His focus drastically improved since last time, though, and he wrote a cohesive short essay on "Zita the Spacegirl." Something that may help him is increasing his confidence. Next time, I will try provide more individual and focused prompts. I think allowing him to choose what he wants to write about may be too much for him. Student B was ready to jump right in. During the first half of the session when I dared Student A to write 3 sentences before his mother came back in the room, Student B begged to be able to take on the dare instead. Student B wrote two short essays on his superhero book. He has a good grasp of how to write an open topic sentence and then provide factual details and examples from the text to support it. He is naturally a good speller, and I noticed he often asked how to spell a word that, when prompted, he was able to spell correctly. At the end of the session, he drew a picture of a magic phone that had many crazy buttons on it that allowed him to practice spelling (e.g., motorcycle)."
"Great morning with the student! He was eager to work on his writing and cutting skills today. We spent some time focusing on how to correctly spell and write his name, which I feel will help him gain more confidence, especially since he will have the opportunity to "sign" in at his preschool in front of other kids."
"The student and I worked on her short answer responses for her application, and I continued to edit her second full-length essay."
