Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"This week is the student's exam week so I have been editing the three essays she has to prepare by Friday. On Monday I edited the first of her papers and sent it back to her."
"The student and I worked for two hours on persuasive writing for a high school app, as well as state assessment prep for an hour last week. He is a burgeoning writer with a lot to learn."
"We started by reviewing last week's work. We then moved on to applying his knowledge of topic sentences and supporting details to whole paragraphs. We used a worksheet with sample paragraphs. For each sample paragraph, he had to identify the topic sentence, the topic, the sentence that didn't belong in the paragraph, and the organizational style. Once he identified the organization style, he was great at spotting the unnecessary sentence. I think he did well on this exercise. We had a few opportunities to discuss vocabulary, too. For the rest of the session, I had him begin to outline a chronologically organized paragraph (chronological was the word of the day). He had a few topic ideas, and we went with summarizing the plot of the book, "Holes". It was fun listening to him talk about the book, which he obviously enjoyed. He started filling out a graphic organizer. We'll finish that and work on the paragraph itself, next week. This style of paragraph will help learn about paragraph structure in the context of fiction structure."
