Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student is in the second to last week of a 4 week course and worked on a 50 question online exercise involving conic sections. Also, some word problems using hyperbolas. Most of the questions dealt with hyperbolas and finding the foci, the center, the vertices, and the equations for the asymptotes."
"The student and I began this session by going over her paper topic for a paper due this Tuesday. We then discussed her process for writing papers. After going over her process, I helped her understand how to utilize outlines to help lay-out a paper. We then outlined her paper and discussed how her research and argument should interact in any paper. Her main need for assistance is with writing transitions, and we next went over topic sentences and concluding sentences. After helping her write the first one of her paper, we practiced writing various topic sentences. By the end of the session, she had a much firmer grasp on what a topic sentence is supposed to do. Furthermore, her topic sentences became much more concise and informative. "
"The student received her science test and she is improving. Her 84 score shows that she is understanding the materials and is able to apply them to test questions. She is still improving in her mathematical skills. Today we also went over her English vocabulary for tomorrow's test."
"For our Monday Spanish session this week, we began by reviewing clothing. I can tell the student has been practicing with these -- she's doing a great job remembering the names. We worked on the spelling of these -- she's able to sound out some words, but not all yet. She does recognize all the words when she reads them, though, so that's great! We then moved on to the names of all the months. She wrote the English name of each month one time and the Spanish name of each month three times. We'll keep practicing with this next week, but she is off to a great start!"
"Reviewed what she has learned so far with the other tutor. I will try to just really focus on the basic concepts of hello, how are you, what is your name, what color is this, etc. She was remembering colors better by the end of the session. We also talked about how to say swimming or I like something for a little bit. "
"The student is working on exponential functions, and since had a quiz the next day, we went through the review sheet. He really had no trouble with the concepts and even did fine with interpreting a word problem. We also practiced with percentages and fractions raised to positive and negative powers."
"We spent all of today going over word problems involving proportions, ratios, and percentages. I left him some old notes of mine to study, and by the end of the session he was doing much better with the material."
"We reviewed a science worksheet and practiced adverbs using a workbook for his quiz. In the time left, he told me about the next chapter in the book. Very good retention and comprehension. We may skip Monday's session si"
"During my last session with the student, I went over essay writing strategies, sentence completion strategies, and sentence correction strategies, while also spending some more time practicing reading comprehension questions. He seemed more confident this time around and was noticeably more focused as well. Before I left, he asked if he could do a practice essay and e-mail it to me for review, which I agreed to do later this week."
"The students and I had another great session together! We went over 10 primary topics covered in SAT math including rates, ratios, simultaneous equations, special triangles, unusual geometric diagrams, combinations, remainders, averages, percents, and symbols."
"The student and I worked on various math concepts. We first reviewed some geometry questions on circles, coordinate plane, and advanced geometric concepts. We then focused on word problems, specifically work problems, rate problems, probability, and combinatorics ."
"The student and I spent the tutoring session doing homework together. We completed a reading comprehension worksheet comparing and contrasting similar evolution patterns between the zebra and the guinea pig. In math, we completed a worksheet on function tables involving input and output. Finally, in science we read a selection about the mercury thermometer and answered questions relating to this topic. In addition, we read a selection on earth science relating to the earth's distribution of heat."
