Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student started summer school in preparation for high school. We worked through some 'Old Testament' homework and also spent some time discussing things he can expect as he transitions from middle school to HS. I gave him tips on developing study habits, time management, test prep, etc., and the importance of those skills after HS."
"The student and I worked on organizing the factual information necessary to complete a paper on the Cherokee Native Americans. We researched and answered questions given by the teachers and organized them on note cards (as required). "
"Physics: Finding the Center of Mass and determining whether the object will topple Calculus: Using FTC to solve problems Biology: Principles of Evolution, Hardy Weinberg Principle and its assumptions."
"The student put his spelling words in alphabetical order. After we finished that, I had him write sentences using words from the list. We then went over each sentence and broke it down into its pieces: noun, pronoun, verb, adjective, adverb, conjunction, and subject. We also corrected the sentences that had grammatical errors."
"The student and I worked through at least one Math, Critical Reading and Writing section. She definitely did way better than we first started back in January. I think she should score relatively well. This was our last SAT session. She takes the SAT this Saturday. We still have two ACT sessions and she takes the ACT next Saturday."
"The student needs a large amount of practice in order to receive the score he desires. Today, I gave him efficient strategies for tackling the critical reading section, although his score will only increase if he practices. We also went over some math mistakes that he made. I would like him to take a simulated PSAT test this weekend, including 2 math sections, 2 reading sections, and 1 long writing section."
"Worked on mathematics with both students. Excellent progress in testing strategies, basic techniques -- and a number of excellent shortcuts. Very happy with the attitudes of both students. They seem to be dedicated and passionate about learning."
"At the beginning we read an article about a football game. The student loves football and enjoys reading the news articles. It also gives him experience in reading a different genre. After that, we read a passage and answered questions. We also reviewed vocabulary words from last week. The session ended with reading from his novel. I modeled a paragraph and he followed."
"Today the student and I reviewed material that she did not understand on her previous test and then prepared for her upcoming exam on Wednesday. We talked about Lyman, Balmer, and Paschen series and the overall concept of electronic transitions. We also calculated energies, frequencies, and wavelengths associated with these electronic transitions. For her upcoming exam, we discussed periodicity - trends in atomic size, ionic size, electronegativity, and ionization energy. She appears to have a much better grasp of the material after today's session."
"The student and I worked through 1 reading and writing section and discussed missed questions and hard concepts. We made a vocab studying strategy and created a list of words to memorize by next session. We discussed a few things relating to motivation and how to keep working even when things get boring or repetitive. Homework for next session is to memorize the list of 50 vocab words and complete 1 section of writing and 1 section of reading."
"For our final session, I quizzed the student on the basic math formulas from the cheat sheet I gave him prior to today. Then we went through selected practice problems from the first math exam. Finally, we practiced reading and a couple science portions and discussed overall strategy for his test on Saturday."
"The first student worked on story problems. She had homework in which she had to state the problem and then solve it. Many were multi-step problems. She did well on this concept and has a test on Thursday which I feel she will do well on. The second student worked on ordering numbers from least to greatest and did really well on this concept. We worked on reading a graph. She did very well on that."
