Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Studied for trimester teat on Monday; stayed for 1 hr 55 min, logged 2 hrs, will stay extra 5 next Saturday. I know time is limited and he is busy, but perhaps we could try to integrate some self-directed exercises during the week. "
"* completed math homework on properties of exponents, solving exponential equations, and solving rational expressions. The student has definitely warmed up to me in our time together, and she seeks step-by-step help less and less."
"Today we went over some more vowel sounds. The student is now starting to learn the sounds that long vowels make, as opposed to short vowels. He was willing to sound out multiple words for me and try the activities I wanted him to try, so we spent a lot of time after playing 'the phone game', an application where he gains coins by answering questions correctly. He is doing best with 'sight words', where he guesses a spoken word from multiple written options. However, he is also improving with spelling words that are spoken. He responds very well to reward incentives such as winning coins that can be used to purchase 'toys' such as virtual silly bands or stickers, and is willing to work fairly hard to earn these coins."
"I conducted a brief academic interview with the student that covered his experience with reading and literature and then proceeded to go through his experience with his summer reading novel, the summer reading essay and his annotations in preparation for his upcoming exam. Then I gave him an assignment that will help him with his annotations and with reviewing the novel."
"This was my first meeting with both students. I really wanted to get a sense of their learning styles, when they were taking the test, and how much time they were devoting to studying. I also explained my teaching strategy, which is to avoid full-length tests in favor of in-depth review of single passages. The session gave me a very good idea of the path we should take from here, and I have high hopes for both students. When we next meet, I plan to bring a sample AAMC passage from each of the three categories, one or two MCAT passages, as well as a few sheets of "topics to memorize.""
