Elementary (Kindergarten - 5th Grade Academic Tutoring)

Middle School (6th – 8th Grade) Academic and Test Prep Tutoring
Middle school is a time of transition and change for all students. Varsity Tutors understands the importance of preparing students to meet more challenging academic standards and helping them to prepare for the upcoming rigors of high school. We can connect you and your child with one-on-one, individualized tutoring for grades 6-8 in all academic subject areas, including foreign languages and executive functioning. Tutors are also available to help students prepare for high school entrance exams with test prep tutoring. Test prep tutoring includes comprehensive diagnostic testing and one-on-one, individualized instruction that identifies specific areas of need and comprehensively prepares students for their specific entrance exams. Both academic and test prep tutoring are done in the comfort of students’ own homes or other convenient locations.
Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
We went over word problems involving systems of inequalities. The student needed help with creating the system based on the problem, and conceptually understanding what the systems were modeling. We will continue to work on that. I left her with 4 practice problems from her prep book.
The student and I started with some reading review, then moved on to tackle some of the math section. We worked through the review book all the way up to percentages.
The student and I went over AP Physics problems involving static equilibrium, rotational equilibrium, torque, and net force. This was in preparation for an upcoming exam. She was very receptive and by the end of the session, she demonstrated that she understood the material.
The student and I discussed the format of the SSAT exam. We reviewed reading passages, specifically narrative humanities, argumentative humanities, and literary fiction passages. We discussed tone, main idea, vocabulary, and inference question types. In addition, I provided specific reading strategies to navigate the density of these reading passages. I assigned him 4-5 reading passages in an SSAT booklet for practice and we will meet tomorrow to follow up on his progress.
We started by reviewing the essay that the student had written. We talked about how the assignment is not to evaluate whether the passage is a strong argument or not but rather to identify and explain the devices that are indeed there. We moved onto the math section, reviewing systems of inequalities, averages, and the algebraic representation of word problems. For homework, I gave him math and reading.
The student and I worked on some sample essay prompts for the writing section of the AP English language and comp exam. He has no problems organizing his thoughts and thinking of examples to support his argument. I emphasized paying attention to exactly what the question is asking, and not straying from that thematically. We will work on more essays and perhaps some multiple choice reinforcement for our last meeting tomorrow.
