Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We started by discussing the essay, since that was the part of the test that the student said he wanted to cover. We went over the scoring criteria and discussed time management techniques, then practiced brainstorming and organizing ideas in response to a couple of practice writing prompts. We'll continue working on the brainstorming process. He's a bright and engaged student, and I'm confident that he'll do well with practice. We also talked about ways to structure the essay so that his writing follows a smooth and logical progression from one example or thought to the next. In particular, we discussed transitions between paragraphs, order of examples, and use of the conclusion paragraph. After working on the essay, we turned our attention to the following multiple-choice assessment writing question types: Identifying Sentence Errors, Improving Sentences, and Improving Paragraphs. We also discussed and practiced strategies for spotting and correcting organizational errors, errors of relevance, and redundancies in the Improving Paragraphs questions. By the end of the session, he understood these questions, and did very well with the practice questions that we worked on. I asked him to spend 20 minutes writing a sample essay on one of the two writing prompts that he worked on with me during this first session, so that we can take a look at the mechanics and structure of his writing next week. After that, we'll likely move on to the Math section."
"The student had completed an essay and sent it to me. There was improvement from the previous essay. Additionally we discussed alternative structures that she could apply. We spoke of some of the methods by which she could approach the essay to get started. The rest of the session was spent on the mathematics section. We focused largely on geometry concepts and probability, going over the more complex geometric problems such as 3 dimensional shapes and applications of 2 dimensional geometry to non-standard problems. We then also went into probability and related it to the choice problems that we had discussed before using many examples. Finally we went through a sample section of the book with the student explaining and talking her way through problems."
"The student and I spent our time working through the assessment Quantitative Section and the Reading Comprehension section. We will pick up on Sunday with the assessment Reading Comprehension section."
