"After reviewing the basics of quadratic equations, we went over factoring. I had him work a few basic factoring problems for review before starting to teach him how to factor polynomials. He had not done any factoring of polynomials in his class yet. He had just had a test over the basics of quadratics and did well."
"On Monday we went over two different sets of homework. One was a continuation of the balancing chemical equations worksheet we worked on last week, and the other was an assignment about transformation of functions in her text book. We went over the worksheet first as the student requested, and got through it pretty quickly. She does understand the process and what writing these equations in this form mean and was able to do it on her own, until we got to the last problem which was extremely difficult. We then went over about half of her book assignment, which was about horizontal translations and how the function changes graphically once you manipulate the x-component. She was a little confused at first, since we were dealing with squared, cubed and exponential functions that she had never really practiced with before, but was able to describe a set of transformations on her own."
"The student had his graded quiz back, and he got a 94 on it, which both he and his mother were very proud for. He made one small mistake and just missed one entire problem. I gave him a similar one to the one he missed, and he got it totally correct this time. Then we finished a project he was working on. He had to write the equation plus domain and range for a bunch of lines. I checked his work and found a couple of errors, but he mostly had it all correct."
"The student and I looked how to find the domain and range from a set of ordered pairs and from a function. We began by looking at a visual representations of a function and non-function and then compare those visuals with the matching ordered pairs. We also looked at the graphs of linear, absolute value and quadratic equations and analyzed their characteristics to help determine that the domain and range of these functions would be. She was given the even problems on skill builder 12 since there is a short amount of time between now and our next session. The student was pleasant and up front about what she needed additional help with."
"We went over exponent rules, dividing/ multiplying exponents, power rule, how to turn negative exponents into positives. The student works hard and is attentive. I suggested compiling the rules into one reference sheet to remember them better. She should work on order of operations concerning exponents and clarifying when to multiply/ add exponents as well as coefficients."
"Today we covered solving rational equations and inequalities. She has a test tomorrow so we spent most of the time solving polynomials since that is where she had the most trouble."
