Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We covered: (1) Multiplying fractions with whole numbers. (2) Water cycle, rivers, streams, glaciers, and related environmental science concepts. Overall, I'm extremely proud of the student for earning a 98% in her exam!"
"We went over the student's homework which covered the order of operations. I wrote out a study guide since she has a quiz tomorrow. I gave her a mock quiz using her homework and in-class work."
"We began to review for the student's math test next week. We continued to work on the concepts of algebraic equations. Adding to these concepts, we worked on equations with fractions and decimals. In addition, we went over the concept of calculating speed and velocity with her science assignments. Next week we will be working on a final review for her exam."
"The student and I met and discussed goals. We completed a few practice questions together. His test will have 15 MC questions very heavily based in algebra. He will focus on the basics of mathematics first. He will then consider the principles of algebra. We discussed isolating the variable and combining like terms. We practiced applying real life situations to algebra and vice versa. We spent time denoting useful problems and theory to study."
"I worked with all three boys in this session, although the majority of the time was spent with two of them. Student A and I worked on converting between radians and degrees, which he was able to do quite well after some practice. I worked with Student B on more ratios. He had completed most of a worksheet and he had me look it over and we talked about a few mistakes that he made. He was able to grasp the concept and do the math required, but he had some difficulty knowing how to answer the exact question asked. Student C didn't have any work he wanted to work on with me, but he wanted to check in. We discussed how his organizational strategies are working and he reported that they are working well - a "B+" if he were to grade himself. We talked about what practices would move the B+ to an A and I told him I would check back with him on those next week. He mentioned he needs to get a new planner and he is hoping to tackle procrastination issues."
"The girls had homework in section 5.6. They were working on graphing congruent shapes given specific transformations. Student A had no trouble at all. She was unable to remember the rules for each specific transformation, but looked up what she couldn't remember. Student B had more difficulty. She could not remember the rules, and even upon looking up the rules would become confused on how to do the work. I wrote out a quick cheat sheet of notes to help them see what was required for each different transformation (reflection, translation, rotation). Hopefully this can be a quick tool to use during homework or something they can use to make flashcards to help with memorization. The last half hour we reviewed the upcoming two sessions. The work will be the same, it's just adding on to what they need to do. They will still need to know the transformation rules to determine if a shape made a translation, rotation, or reflection for 5.7 and 5.8 requires making 2 step transformations."
