Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"She picked a difficult topic to write a paper on for her college course and needed help organizing her thoughts and was not sure how to use MLA format. I walked her through the topic and asked her questions to help her organize her ideas. We edited two to three pages of her work and made a plan for the rest of the document. I also showed her a few websites that give examples of citations."
"We focused on writing introduction, organization, and how to set up arguments/ counter claims. The student felt session was helpful, but needs to really focus for next few sessions on his AP English language and comp exam, specifically how to have enough time to complete the three essays."
"The student and I made big strides on his history paper today. The student came prepared with notes from the library books we found on Thursday, and he found some great sources during our work today. We began an overview of the July Crisis in 1914. With his understanding of the Crisis in place, we began to write a summary for the paper and outlined the other sections, including our focus, which will be specific Russian moments in the Crisis. We plan to complete the paper in a session on Tuesday."
"The student went over a practice test. We spent most of the session going over the structure of the test and how to approach studying for it. Before our next session, she is going to take a practice test that we can go over."
"We spent this session looking for scholarly, peer-reviewed academic journals to help the student with his paper on ethical issues for ENGL 122. We found four articles, and he wrote a thesis and an outline. Next session, he will have a rough draft."
"We started with a review of the student's AP Literature practice for the week. He did all of the multiple choice questions from the test which he found online. We calculated that he would need three "7's" on the essay portion to score a "5." He has been averaging "8's" on his essays, so once again, we are right on target for his goal. In the remaining time, I asked him to compose a response to an essay question. As usual, his free response was excellent. It would have probably earned an "8. ""
