Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"During this session, the student and I covered derivatives quite extensively. She had a worksheet that she needed to complete for Monday that had all kinds of functions that she needed to take the derivative of. She has become very proficient in taking a derivative. She also makes really good notes once she realizes she has done something wrong, which is something good I've noticed about her work habits. I have also noticed that she doesn't really like being walked through a problem. She learns well by doing the problem herself and then having me critique her on how she went about solving the problem. This strategy has been working well for us the past few sessions."
"We covered a review of the material to be tested on the midterm next week. Topics included: finding the equation of a line tangent to a function at a specific time; the relationship between position, velocity, and acceleration; trigonometric identities; as well as Quotient and Product rules for differentiation. The student was not struggling so much with the concepts, but rather which concept to use for each question. I advised her that one way to practice this is to break down the question and look at every component, and solve it one step at a time. She also has the rest of the review packet that we did not complete to work on."
"The student and I covered related rates today. It was the only material he was really concerned about for his upcoming test, so we did a lot of practice problems. The session went well, and we covered the method to solving these kinds of problems."
"The student and I discussed strategies for solving optimization problems. Setting up the problems is the most difficult part of the optimization challenge. We walked through many examples together, and I encouraged her to try at least 5 problems on her own tonight."
"This session focused on getting to know each other and establishing a baseline for future sessions. We worked on limits, the chain rule, the product rule, and implicit differentiation. The material covered was previous exams. The student has a fundamental understanding of the material he is working with. We discussed exam and homework strategies as well."
"We started going through the product rule in detail during this session. The student seemed to do just fine with it once he got the hang of the formula. The only problems that gave him any issues were the ones where he was required to apply the rule twice inside the same problem. With some more practice, I am confident that he can master this material."
