Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We covered the limit definitions of the derivative, chain rule and product rule, graphing the derivative from the graph of the function, slope, secant lines, and conjugates. The student had a little trouble with applying the limit definitions, but she understood it after I explained how they were derived. She had several old exams from previous years to work on to continue studying."
"The student and I further practiced particular solutions, differential equations, and vertical motion problems this evening."
"We continued our session from earlier in the day and did a review for the test tomorrow. We covered simplifying radicals, finding the slope equation given a set of points, and also reviewed the position equation and velocity equation as an introduction to calculus."
"We studied more for the student's test. Some topics I helped her refresh on were:
1. Finding the area under the curve by taking the integral of a function describing that curve.
2. Finding the volume of a 3dimensional figure that was formed by rotating a function about an axis.
3. Performing implicit differentiation.
4. Verifying the 'Mean Value Theorem'"

"The student and I did integrals of logarithms and also practiced logarithmic differentiation. She is doing very well in her class, and seems to grasp the concept of integrals and differentials. At the next session, we will continue to do practice problems and make sure logarithms are very clear for her."
"After starting with a warmup based on what we went over our last session, the student and I went over setting up problems with variables on both sides of the equations. Once the equation is set up she generally does not have an issue, but we need to do a bit of work on first setting up the problem. We also did some writing exercises from an SAT prep book, on which she did very well."
"The student and I worked on multiplication facts (numbers 19) for the majority of the time. He should work on this so he is able to say the answer quickly. After working on the facts he was able to answer fast so I think will 510 minutes a night with flash cards he will be caught up very quickly. Next we worked on word problems involving addition and subtraction. He is a hard worker and really wants to learn!"
"The student and I worked together on functions. Specifically we reviewed how to plot and solve them graphically and solving them algebraically. We also did a quick review of linear motion for physics."
"The student sent along her class notes from last week's session for us to go over together, which included rational expressions, more factoring and reducing expressions to lowest terms and finding restrictions.
We touched base in hopes to get a copy of her last exam so that we have a better idea how to structure a practice exam for her to take this weekend. She will ask her teacher for the copy on Tuesday 10.21 class. I will create a practice exam based on some of the exercises we have gone over in her notes and in the book. I left the student with a few problems to solve and send to me over the next day, and she will send me copies of her class notes for this week's session. Next week we will go over the practice exam I create and any test tips."
"Reviewed her proposal for her thesis. We will continue to work on interpreting between independent and dependent variables and how to correctly quantify them. I went over the process of a statistical survey and how to interpret its results as well as an intro into statistical analysis. Afterward, the student had little trouble making the corrections in her proposal."
"During this session with the student, we previewed chapter 10: areas, measurements, and volume. He had just completed his chapter 9 test and told me it went well, and so once he receives it back we will go over it together. He has been learning a lot about triangles and trigonometric functions. We went over how to use the functions properly and he learned the rules very well. He struggled a bit at first, but caught on very quickly! I did not leave him with any practice, and have no concerns at all from this session."
"Today we focused mainly on solving word problems that involved decimals, mixed numbers, and fractions. We also did word problems involving comparing fractions and percents. I went over the steps for a basic strategy for solving word problems, as the student's mom identified word problems as an area in which he needs work. We ended our session reviewing quadrilaterals from last session."
