Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I continued going through the modules for his upcoming class in statistics. We focused on the steps involved in hypothesis testing and how to write hypothesis statements, set the probability level, and determine risk. We used real life examples from his job to look at a possible tests of correlation and outlined the difference between this and an experiment. We also reviewed previous notes to reinforce earlier material."
"We continued working on regression and correlation. I introduced multiple regression and showed the student the connections with single regression (terms, form, etc.). I then showed him how to generate it in Excel. I showed him what parts of the analysis to focus on and how to use it to answer questions of significance. We then practiced writing the equation based on the analysis, and I had him try some basic application problems. We ended the session reviewing how to quantify categorical data."
"We covered different types of data (qualitative and quantitative) and analysis of data, bias, sampling, and using the Minitab program to evaluate 1 and 2 variable statistics. The student isn't worried about the class right now. Hopefully this is a trend!"
"We covered sample standard deviation, summation notation, frequency distribution, class interval, and frequency. The student is a very attentive student and very determined. I reminded her that she has to repeat the material to help it sink in. We are having a third session to finish reviewing this homework assignment."
"Today I made a presentation on the discrete probability distribution and we went over how to calculate the mean, variance and standard deviation for a population given a table of x and p(x) values. We went through the calculations by hand and talked about what all of the values mean or indicate about the data on a conceptual level. I also provided the student with a video that will show her how to do all of these calculations in Excel, which she will probably have to do for her homework. I think today's session was very successful because we covered a lot of material and she seemed to understand it well by the end of the lesson."
"The student wanted to review a quiz she took recently. The problems involved working with sample means, interquartile ranges, and unions and intersections of sets. After reviewing the material, she had a better understanding of the concepts she initially had difficulty with."
