Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We went over how to identify and graph even/odd functions, negative power functions (rational functions), and fractional power functions (root functions). We then worked on reverse engineering a power function given two points."
"During this session, we focused on reviewing for an upcoming exam on conic sections. We talked about the implicit equations for circles, ellipses, parabolas and hyperbolae. We worked on translating between properties of these shapes (including foci, vertices, etc.) and equations. Towards the end of the session, we talked about testing strategies and approaches."
"We did a homework assignment covering solving system of equations. Mostly, solving the system of equations involved using the substitution method. And we briefly touched on the elimination method. I think the student picked up the subject pretty well."
"The student requested to go over a past test on rate of change (differentiating multiple variables wrt time). We did some challenging problems, focusing on how the geometry of the shapes helped us write a second equation. We also started her vacation homework, concentrating on critical points and Rolle's Theorem. Particularly, we learned about the derivative of sin and cosine."
"We covered topics in Statistics and Precalculus. In statistics, we covered two sample mean testing. We covered the basics of the testing method which included determining whether or not we could apply the testing, the application of the method, and the interpretation of the results. We went over three or four homework questions and went through the steps required to do the testing on the calculator or by hand. The AP test is coming up in six weeks so I attempted to highlight the "signs" that show that a two-mean t-test/confidence interval would be required. The material did not present any problems or difficulties. Good session overall."
"This was our first session together. We went over the class structure, available materials, and what areas she was struggling with. She explained that she sought out a tutor because she misses a lot of class for athletics. We then went over material for a quiz retake that she has tomorrow. The student picks up on concepts very quickly, and is good about asking questions as soon as they come up. We were able to clear up many issues quickly. The session was held in front of a chalk board, which helped because she is a visual learner. We will continue to meet once a week."
