Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I spent today's session once again working on finding the area of various shapes, but this time we were tasked to do so using the apothem and perimeter of the shapes. We started the session reviewing that an apothem was a line from the center of the shape to a base, and that we can use this line to find the area of the shape with the equation Area = 1/2 (apothem)(perimeter). In situations where we are only given one of the 2 required quantities, we can find the other by forming a 30:60:90 triangle within the parent shape, with the apothem across from the 30; 1/2 of the length of a side (of the parent shape) across the 60, and the radius across from the 90."

"Today I only worked with the student. His handwriting has drastically improved in a week. We worked on types of lines in math, States and capitals, and spelling words."
"Today, the student and I went over the last of his math homework. He had a worksheet with standard deviation problems that he did on his own. His other homework covered how to find the degree of monomials (adding up the exponents of all the variables), which I showed him how to do. I then showed him how that information would help him write equations in standard form (in order of greatest to least degreed monomial). We then worked on combining like terms and more advanced FOIL problems. He is showing some progress now, which is encouraging. He has an easier time focusing and even remembering what we covered during our previous session. I think meeting twice a week really helps."
"We used this time to review and practice questions that will be on the students upcoming high school math placement test. We reviewed each problem and how to work through it."
"We completed the review of the assessment exam released tests and items. We worked on processing and reflecting before selecting an answer choice. The student then completed the second half of one of the assessment exam science released tests."
