Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We covered matrices in Algebra II. The rest of the hour was spent on biology questions; data analysis, genetic phylogenics, and exptal design. We will focus more on interpretation of raw data next time and continue math studies."
"We covered Algebra and Geometry and the student did quite well with most of the problems. She quickly picked up any that she missed once I explained it to her and I asked her to do half an hour a day of SAT flashcards alternating the days between Algebra, Geometry, and Passage-Based Reading for next time."
"Today, we went over a diagnostic that I had him do. He scored a 2390 and 2270, respectively, on both tests. We went over his mistakes on CR, M, and W. For CR, he still has issues with the interpretation of passages because he applies a personal bias or understanding of the topic at hand to the reading and therefore answers questions with information that isn't explicitly stated or expressed in the passage. As for Math, we went over some properties of inscribed geometric shapes and permutations. As for Writing, his biggest issue is with paragraph revision in creating good flow of ideas and what sentences have unnecessary info and could be deleted. I had him work on some CR and W worksheets during our session to reinforce the ideas."
"Today we focused mainly on trigonometry, trig functions, and word problems having to do with both finding distances and modeling systems as trig functions. We spoke at length about radians the unit circle, and I instructed the student to make flashcards to practice converting between degrees and radians and finding the sine, cosine and tangent of common angles around the unit circle."
"I met with the student for a session of SAT tutoring. In this session I introduced the student to the practice site I like to use. The student did pretty well on the quizzes I gave to him but could still improve on math and grammar. He is very strong on critical reading. One thing that will serve the student well is his desire to learn. He makes sure to ask about concepts that confuse him, and that is a good sign of his dedication. I am confident that the student will do very well on the test."
"The student and I met today to work on more test problems that will likely be on his exam next month. He said he had a practice exam in a school tutor session and was in a to finish so he did poorly. However, he misses very little during our sessions. He often second guesses himself during tests so that is something to work on."
"We went over the critical reading completing the sentences and I sent the student a list of "words-to-know." We continued to go over math and how to attack questions. We finished the session by talking how to go about the writing portion. I gave her Algebra work to go over for her homework and I gave her prompt to do."
"We reviewed some of the higher difficulty math problems, because the student's performance in math is drastically improving. We went over how to set up problems by drawing out the situation, as well as laying out each step of work to prevent errors. In writing, we drilled subject/verb agreement, tense, active speech, some idioms, and other grammar rules. Before next session, the student will take and score Test 3 in her book."
"The student and I covered the writing portion of the SAT. We went over her old essays, to come up with ideas to help her improve her writing abilities and went over multiple practice problems from material I had provided. I left her with extra practice problems to do before we meet next."
"We split this session between English and math review. For English, we reviewed a few grammar rules (including pronoun-antecedent disagreement and pronoun case). She practiced spotting errors in sentences and soon got her time down to around a minute per question. We then reviewed math, focusing mainly on ratios and proportions. She knows how to answer questions based on proportions."
"During our second session, he and I continued working through the reading and writing sections of a new practice test. Although we stopped at points during each section to review the parts of the test he had worked through thus far, we timed his progress to make sure he was pacing his work. He does not have difficulty completing the material in the time allotted. He also showed a better grasp of the questions today. Often when he did not answer a questions correctly, he had already narrowed down the answer choices to the correct answer and one other answer. Reading the sentences in a whisper voice aloud may help him hear writing mistakes."
"We began the session by doing some practice sentence improvement problems from website, focusing on issues she had last session. She's already shown significant improvement since we first met. Then we worked through some practice questions, especially the sentence completion problems in the reading section of the SAT study guide. Between the last two sessions she took a practice test."
