Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"In this session with the student we reviewed topics from previous sessions for her upcoming test. We also went over one new topic which was Diels Alder reactions. We discussed the movement of electrons in the reaction, creation of rings, and the optimal condition for the diene/dienophile. We covered several practice problems from the book in order to conceptualize the products of these reactions. She was left with a study guide to go over for the test."
"We started this session by going over some of the student's remaining questions for general chemistry (stoichiometry, compound formulas, periodic trends) and biology (fundamentals of the cell and enzymes). I think most of the questions she had were spur of the moment kind of questions, as when we went back to review them, she was able to quickly understand what confused her and why. After this review, we kept going through biology and discussed energy pathways (glycolysis, Krebs cycle, etc.), reproduction & development, and some of homeostasis. She has a couple of chapters to review on her own, but we are mostly finished with biology at this point."
"The student recently took a practice exam. We spent this session reviewing the test and discussing reasons for incorrect answers. I asked her to explain each answer and her thought processes, we then talked about how she could have corrected herself. I left her with instructions to go through the entire test and for each question write out three things: what concept is the question really testing; how do the answer choices relate to each other, the question, and the passage; and what is the correct answer and why. After she completes this she will take another practice test prior to our next session."
"The student improved on the verbal reasoning section, but did worse in the physical sciences section on her latest test. Went through the questions that she missed. She struggled a bit with acids/bases and solutions, so we reviewed those topics again. Also went through a couple of passages in verbal that she struggled with. Overall, it seems like as she gets more comfortable with the test structure, she will relax and do better. In good shape for the test."
"The student and I met for our final session. She informed me that her last practice exam score was an improvement from the previous two scores. In previous sessions, she struggled most with the physical sciences but feels she has improved in that area because of the practice problems she has done with me and while studying alone. Today, we used flash cards to review content from physics, biology, general and organic chemistry. We also worked on a study plan for her to use to continue studying until her test day."
"With the student, we completed questions and/or passages on redox reactions, energy (physics), work, electric circuits, and moment of inertia/kinematics. Overall, while she initially had trouble balancing redox half-reactions and solving energy problems, with some assistance, she was able to get through most questions and complete them correctly."
