Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"During our session on 7/30 at 5p, the student and I reviewed the same material as last lesson, as well as more thermodynamics discussion: negative Gibbs free energy as always spontaneous, positive as nonspontaneous, neg enthalpy as exothermic, positive as endothermic, and exothermic reaction release heat from the system to the surroundings thereby increasing change of entropy for surroundings, breaking of bonds releases heat, forming bonds requires heat, non spontaneous reactions can be made spontaneous with a change in temperature, definitions of entropy and enthalpy, redox reactions - that is, which species is being oxidized and which is reduced (OILRIG = Oxidation is Losing electrons, Reduction is Gaining electrons), oxidation numbers (and corresponding rules: elements in their elemental form have an oxidation number of 0, the oxidation number of a monatomic ion is the same as its charge, etc.), balancing Oxidation-Reduction equations by the half-reaction method, rules of the half-reaction method (i.e., assign oxidation numbers to determine what is oxidized and reduced, write the oxidation and reduction half-reactions, balance each half reaction by: balancing elements other than H and O, balance O by adding H2O, balance H (/H+) by adding H+ (/OH-), balance charge by adding electrons, multiply half reactions so e- gained are equal), etc."
"Tonight we covered more Chemistry focusing on test prep for him. We talked about Lewis acids and bases, we solved pH problems, especially with buffer solutions."
"The student and I reviewed stoichiometry conversions, then continued to gas laws and percent composition. We didn't have to make up much ground from having missed time, which is great."
