Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We spent our time going over old quizzes and homework problems to prepare the student for his midterm later today. We began by solving an optimization problem together then I discussed the general process to follow for all optimizations. We looked at finding a line tangent to a curve at a given point and went over some problems with limits and how to determine if a limit is indeterminate or not. We looked at a derivative graph and considered the types of information we could learn about the original function from the graph of the derivative. We went over several random problems among these types and closed with a talk about the kinds of problems he might see and the general steps to follow (e.g. figure out the what is being asked, the equation for it, the derivative equation, and the zero values of the derivative) to solve each type."
"We covered derivatives of functions involving polynomials, exponents, and logarithms, setting the second derivative equal to zero to solve for the inflection points, how to pick test values of x to determine the concavity of regions between the inflection points, and how to use the logarithm and exponential functions as inverse functions to isolate the variable x when it's occluded by said functions. I asked him to review the notes and problems we had gone over during today's session for next time."
"We spent our session today working on the calculator type of integrals, learning how to set up complicated integrals to find area and volume. We worked on a different approach to setting up integrals, rather than thinking about the area we are solving for, thinking about the individual wedges/shells that make up the integral because she has no problem finding the area/ volume of shapes/ solids."
"The student has a quiz tomorrow that covers most of the material in chapter 12 as well as comprehensive information from the entire semester."
"The student had another essay due for her English class, so we worked out the broad outline of the subject of her paper. After discussing various details, she wrote her paper during the session."
"In this session, we studied statistics. We went over the bell-curve and the various concepts associated with it; such as finding the standard deviations from the given percentages, then using it to derive other quantities. When done, I assigned her a few problems to practice. As always, I left her with detailed notes and completed problems for her to go over in her own time. We also started a new formula-sheet for statistics."
