Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"During this session, we practiced for the writing section of the PSAT. We talked about punctuation rules and subject verb agreement concepts. The student knew most of these. Overall, she did very well during our session and understood everything we talked about."
"Today, we worked on reviewing the content from this semester's Algebra II class to prepare for the student's final. We breezed through most of the content until we reached graphs of and operations with polynomials. We spent most of the remainder of our time solving textbook problems related to each of the learning objectives for the two relevant chapters."
"We went over practice sections. We reviewed answers that were wrong. We then focused on math principles such as strategic times to factor and strategic times to use the quadratic equation. Then, we went over problems that focused on these areas. I have asked the student to remember to plug answers back into questions and to make sure to double-check her math calculations."
"After reviewing the student's PSAT and ACT scores, we worked on ACT math and reading. He completed a math section and 53 out of 60 questions correctly, a scaled score of 31, 3 scaled points higher than his test score. We then looked at two reading passages; he said when he took the test that he struggled with the first (fiction) passage and had to read it twice, which put him in a time crunch for the rest of the reading section. I wanted to see if the fiction passage would again be troublesome for him, but it was no more so than the social sciences passage."
"Continued SAT study. Focused on some new math material, paying attention to system of equations/matrices and some new trig problems."
"During this session, the student and I worked quickly through flashcards for all sections. He has a good grasp of reading and writing concepts, so we moved through those quickly. We went over the same practice test we did last time, logs and exponents, because these are topics he is uncomfortable with. I wanted to see what he had retained from our previous session. He scored better but had a hard time remembering how to solve the problems. We reviewed how to work those problems as well as inverse variation problems. His test is on Sunday, and we may resume tutoring for the ACT or SAT at a later date."
