"In preparation for the student's exam, we went over the previous semester exam and answered the questions. She seemed to get some of the concepts, but the past exam was more detailed than the problem sets we had been using to prepare. We decided that we would use the past exams as a basis for studying for the subsequent exams."
"During this session with the student, we spent our time reviewing for his Organic Chemistry exam this Thursday. We reviewed the basic concepts behind Sn1, Sn2, E1, and E2 reactions, including their general mechanisms and what indications our nucleophile and substrate give. This session was very productive, and we were able to take advantage of the full time to work through different problems, including some on the practice exam. He has ample time to continue reviewing the material and have success on his upcoming exam."
"Today we went over conjugated pi systems, reactions involving dienes, kinetic vs. thermodynamic product, allylic bromination involving NBS, and Diels-Alder reactions. The student did very well today with the concepts and had a better understanding of the Diels-Alder reactions after our session. Great job today!"
"We covered some problems on glycolysis, Krebs cycle, electron transport chain, fatty acid synthesis, metabolic diseases, and carbohydrate metabolism in tissues. The student needed help with some of the drawings of glycolysis intermediates and waxes, and oxidation-reduction problems. She was very appreciative of the material covered and understands the material more than she did before the session."
"Today's topics included acyl transfer reactions/ the general mechanism, acyl substitution reaction, the stability and reactivity of acyl derivatives, saponification (as an example of ester hydrolysis in base), base-promoted ester hydrolysis reaction and mechanism, acid-catalyzed ester hydrolysis reaction and mechanism (and how to make the carbonyl carbon more electrophilic), and then we ended on keto-enol tautomerization, enols and enolates, and general enolate reactions. We will continue on Friday with more enolate reactions including aldol condensation."
"I reviewed stereochemistry (R and S), meso compounds, achiral compounds, chiral compounds, SN1/E1, SN2, and E2. I advised the student to do as many problems as possible before we meet next time. I advised him to review the notes I gave him during the tutoring session."
