Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today's session was an hour and a half, and the student was able to be fully engaged the entire time. We set up the session for next week on Monday for 2 hours. For the reading passage, we used a science passage. He did well with the passage but was reminded to read with a purpose and check what the questions are looking for. The quantitative review for the day focused on a review of the fractions, decimals, and exponents from Monday's lesson. We are going to continue to practice expressions and equations. In synonym practice, we did root word and suffixes practice. Today's math focus was on decimals and percentages. We will continue working on these, as he needs work with answering the questions in the different ways that they can be asked."
"The student completed an ISEE lower level practice test today-- but only the math section. We went through it problem by problem, and I retaught any problem that she didn't understand. She still has difficulty converting decimals to fractions and fractions to decimals. She could use more practice with this concept before the ISEE, so we will continue to work on it."
"The student was very focused and had a pretty excellent intuitive grasp of the materials covered by the ISEE quantitative section. We discussed a little bit of the reading section at the end, and we'll continue there next time."
"The student is having more problems than our first session revealed. This is completely understandable given his newness to algebra, the newness of the test, and the fact that he hasn't done much preparation. He is a very quick learner, and I strongly believe he has the potential to do well on the test, but he will need to make preparing for it a priority. He should complete at least one full math test (a section 2 and section 4) on his own so that we can use the time we have to identify problem areas and go over what he wasn't able to do. I will also assign additional algebra and mental math problems to supplement the hw."
"This was our 1st session. We worked on reading comp strategies and vocabulary from the practice test. I hope to work with the student's math tutor to give the results of the math and quantitative diagnostic assessment."
"During this session, we completed review of the practice ISEE. We talked specifically about maintaining a positive attitude during the Quantitative portion of the test, and we also discussed taking whatever break is made available to her so that she can clear her head of any frustrations to be able to refocus her energy on subsequent parts of the test. We reinforced skipping questions that she does not know how to solve to come back to if time remains. We also practiced looking for precisely what the question is asking so that the problem is only solved once and done so in an efficient manner. We ended the session by practicing algebraic concepts such as simplifying equations with many variables and multiplying/dividing equations with multiple variables."
