Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today we reviewed two sections that the student prepared prior to class, one quantitative reasoning section, and one language section. We discussed the questions that he got wrong, as well as strategies for avoiding similar mistakes in the future."
"Today was our first session. We went over the quantitative section today in great detail, as the student felt this was a weak area for herself. She had a bit of trouble at first with the geometric comparison, but was able to turn it around and do very well as we work through each problem."
"The student is getting much better with word problems. At this rate I think they shouldn't be a problem for her much longer. She still has some difficulty with some formulas, but overall I am fairly happy with where she is at. Because of this I decided to turn our focus towards the verbal and reading portions of the test. We built out a vocabulary list for her to use for study."
"The student and I spent the entire session working through a math practice test section of the HSPT prep book. Overall, he did very well. At one point we were looking at how multiplying or dividing by multiples of 10 moves the decimal point to the right or the left. It was a natural place to introduce the topic of scientific notation. I gave him a 15 minute mini-lesson on the topic, which in addition to being a likely HSPT test question, will also be important in his science classes. Near the end of the section of the practice test in which we were working there was a particularly difficult problem that gave him a hard time. However, when I showed him how the problem broke down, he was able to understand it."
"Today we reviewed the diagnostics test that the student took. She did very well on several sections but struggled slightly with formula knowledge. It would be good for her to take more practice tests and research some general geometry formulas."
"The student completed a practice verbal skills section at this session. She is maintaining her high performance in this area, reaching a 43/60 score. She followed my advice of relying on her instincts to solve vocabulary questions, but may need some review of our strategies for logic problems; even so, she had high consistency in this latter category as well. In mathematics achievement, we ran into some minor kinks with algebra. While she occasionally loses the plot in attempting to completely isolate a variable, she wisely prevents herself from guessing at algebra rules that could get her into trouble. She can simply plug in options from the answer choices when she hits a wall in order as a supplement to her own calculations."
