Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We covered a lot in today's session. The student had two projects: 1) The Blog, 2) The interview of a working professional, and 3) The Open Source essay. The Blog is coming along really well and I was actually surprised by how good it looks. The goal of the project is to create a functioning blog that gets ranked by Google and other SERPs (Search Engine Result Pages). She and her team have already accomplished this, so I focused on steering her in the direction of refining the website and optimizing it for SERPs so she can get better rankings. This is called Search Engine Optimization (SEO). We spent about an hour reviewing strategies that can positively affect her rankings on SERPs. I emailed her a PDF that gave specific, step-by-step instructions on how to do this. I make specific recommendations on things she should do for her blog including: a) adding Title Tags, b) adding Keywords, c) adding Descriptions, d) adding captions for images, e) creating short videos for blog posts, and f) adding analytics to track traffic sources. I also asked her to send me any questions she has. She seems to have a good grasp on the concept of SEO and how it affects her blog's rankings on SERPs. The remainder of the time was split between answering questions for her interview. She chose to use me as the subject, which is convenient because I happen to be a Vice President of Digital Marketing, so it should provide her a good source of information. We also discussed ideas for her "Open Source" essay. At first, she wasn't clear about what Open Source meant. So I spent some time with her explaining it and providing real-world examples such as Reddit, Wikipedia, Linux, BitCoin, and even some computers that have been build as Open Source projects. In the end, she was very clear on what Open Source was. I asked her to send me the essay so I can proofread it before she submits it in class on Thursday. I'm confident she'll write a good essay but I just think it's always good to have some proofread a paper before it's submitted. She is in good shape. She has a great attitude toward the work and she's genuinely interested. Her projects are looking good. She's clearly doing her readings and meeting up with her team regularly. I've seen a great improvement since the first session at the beginning of the semester. She's going to do great in this class this semester."
"We went over the information for the student's test Thursday, mainly working from her professor's PowerPoint and her reading materials. I helped her reread some of the important information to add to her study notes. We will try to meet on Wednesday evening to go over all of her notes to prepare for her test the next day."
"The student and I worked on his final exam essay question on the role of incentives and strong governments in the economic well being of a country. We read over the question and article together and he composed a thorough and well-supported answer. We talked briefly about his exam today and he sounds confident and prepared. He mentioned that he was very happy with his first experience with a one-on-one tutor."
