Recent Brant Tutoring Session Notes

Tutoring review by Amy in Brant, NY
This was our first session, so the student and I worked through some basic/elementary reading exercises. We discussed his school work, the subjects/material he struggles with, grades, likes and dislikes. I have him a middle school diagnostic assessment with a non-fiction piece to gauge his literal, inferential, and evaluative skills. We marked the questions he had trouble with so we can address them at a later session. I also gave him a writing prompt for a short journal to assess his writing skills. We started some annotations and emotional connotation word work with the story "A Tale of Desperaux."

Tutoring review by Shivalika S. in Brant, NY
The student and I started by going over what quartiles referred to in reference to graphs and statistics. I gave him some numbers and allowed him to draw out a box and whisker plot on his while I explained what median, first quartile, and third quartile referred to. My goal for the student is to gain an intuitive knowledge of math, rather than just memorize the facts. After explaining the quartiles, I helped the student finish his review sheet. I explained the common terms to him and allowed him to work problems on his own while guiding him whenever he needed help. I also wrote down a few notes to help him prepare for his test on Monday. The student is very bright and catches on to concepts quickly, and overall just a very polite and pleasant kid to work with.

Tutoring review by Jennifer in Brant, NY
The student and I discussed revisions to his first two essays, focusing on paragraph structure and mechanics, overused/ misused phrases, and ways to strengthen arguments and impact statements. He wrote strong thesis statements and used interesting examples, but often failed to clearly explain his examples or tie them to the broader prompt. We also outlined his next essay assignment (Do we underestimate the importance of community due to the American culture of individualism?). He brainstormed some warrant ideas and wrote out impact statements for each body paragraph. We also completed two reading comprehension passages- one social science, one fictional prose- and emphasized both process of elimination and returning to the text to find evidence supporting an answer choice.

Tutoring review by Jon in Brant, NY
We covered questions from previous tests in order to prepare for upcoming final. Questions covered conservation of energy, rotation and rotational velocities, balancing molecule reaction equations, energy and heat conversion and latent heat vs specific heat. We specifically discussed strategies for analyzing which questions require what approach be in kinematic equations or energy equations or something else. The student said she is feeling more confident in the material even with a close final date. I gave her instructions to continue doing book problems.

Tutoring review by Eric in Brant, NY
Todays session with this student went really well. It was our first session in awhile, but she is doing really well in physics and so we worked on calculus to help her get ready for her exam next week. We spent all of our time working on related rates problems and on optimization problem. Her biggest struggle is with the algebra of the problem and a little bit on the setup. She had a great attitude like always. My biggest guide today was on how she writes out her work. I helped her to clean it up so that she can clearly see what she needs to complete. I also helped her with how to set up the problems and think of them in terms of things she already knows. I informed her to let me know if she needs more practice. I saw some of her physics grades and she was getting over 90% on them.
