"We reviewed materials to prepare for the test on Saturday. We went over verbal analogy approaches, and then we reviewed math topics and did practice questions."
"Today we worked on SSAT vocabulary and reading. We started with general vocabulary practice, working from a set of SSAT words. We checked definitions and created meaningful sentences for each of the words. For practice, the student will be making flashcards that will include the definition as well as the sentence and she'll be checking the sentences with her parents to make sure that they make sense. We then turned to analogies and practiced several strategies for solving analogies even when one of the words in the question is an unknown. I stressed that quality is more important than quantity. Finally, we worked on a reading passage. The student practiced skimming the article and then working with the questions. The first question was a general "what is this article about" type of question. I suggested that we work with the other, more specific questions first and return to that one at the end. When we did, she was pleasantly surprised to discover that it was fairly easy to solve. For next time, she will continue to work through her practice book as well as learning new vocabulary."
