Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today, the student and I first reviewed concepts such as functions, factoring, and rational expressions. Then, we completed a practice test section together."
"We began the session with incredibly brief test corrections which were a joy because there were so few. The student has shown much improvement, especially in the mathematics and passage based questions. We spent the majority of the time going through SAT vocabulary and looking at roots, synonyms, antonyms, and then completing the sentence questions."
"I gave the student a last practice math exam, and we went over the questions she missed. We made a study sheet to jog her memory."
"We went over the student's homework first, which was Reading Comprehension. We then focused on Math for a while and did some arithmetic practice problems. Next I gave him some vocabulary words to learn for next week. Finally, we did some scrambled paragraphs from the Assessment Exam Handbook."
"The student and I discussed writing strategies, and then she took a math diagnostic test. We went over the test together, as well as some writing questions."
"The student is bright, self confident, and able to converse using advanced language skills and maintaining full eye contact. To help her prepare for the ERB exam, I'm mixing non-verbal practice worksheets with practical playtime. This week I chose to focus on sequences/patterns. Through playing with the student's own toys, I pointed out instances of patterns and asked her to identify others. I also assigned her a "pattern game" (pointing out patterns where ever she sees them) to play with her parents throughout the week to reinforce this skill. I also discussed other ways her mother might incorporate some of the verbal and non-verbal skills as practice throughout the student's normal routines. Since the student is 5 years old, I'll focus on teaching/practicing test taking skills in an informal, play environment, working in verbal questions (I refer to them as riddles or games) in conversation during play."
"We discussed SAT strategies and did a critical reading section together. We set up a schedule for how the student should prepare for the upcoming PSAT in 3 weeks."
"I did a grammar review followed by a grammar section. The student has shown significant improvement in English and a minor improvement in the math section."
"We focused on reading, as this is the student's largest area for improvement. We reviewed several reading practice sections."
"Today the student and I began covering the ISEE math/quantitative reasoning sections. This section is a little more involved than the fundamental math skills section, so it took us a little longer to cover the material thoroughly. We went through time management during the math section, guesstimation, plugging in (which we will cover with more depth during the next session), ratios, averages, and percent change. For next week, I would like her to complete a practice drill and take note of the time it takes her to complete it (we're aiming for about a minute/ problem). Next week we will continue working on this section, and hopefully complete most of it."
"We worked on placement exam practice sections, mainly regarding synonyms and sentence completion. In learning new vocabulary, I used football and other sports sentences to help define the words in context and asked the student to continue that method on some new vocabulary for homework."
"Today, the student and I mostly covered the English section of the exam. We focused on using our own words to fill in the blanks, looking for context clues, etc."
