Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Final session prior to test on 1/4. We reviewed the test admission instructions. I reviewed and critiqued the student's essay on "ideal vacation:" narrative elements were good; there was some repetition in the conclusion; minor typos; sentence structure was the area where the greatest improvement can be made. We discussed and addressed these issues for the student to correct. We covered vocabulary words from "300 Words for High School" and finished with the math review on word problems, covering the guidelines and key words and doing practice problems. I gave the student handouts on calculating the area, perimeter, and volume of geometric shapes, and on the keywords to identify math operations when reading word problems."
"We covered some of the math concepts the student was struggling with (percents, ratios), went over vocab words and strategies, and some general test taking strategies."
"We reviewed strategies on synonyms, analogies, reading comprehension, math concepts-ratios, percentages, and exponents, etc. With each section, I had the student do the problems as if she were taking the exam, and I listened to her thinking process. We then came up with a tailored method of dealing with each of the problem types, such as differentiating between problems where she knows the word and problems where she doesn't know the word."
