"We covered plant biology: double fertilization, endosperm, difference between fruit and flowers (especially reproduction), haploid and diploid differences, basic anatomy, antipodal cells, etc. She struggled with seeing the big picture when presented with many details, so I explained to her the importance of first focusing on the main points and then mastering the details. I instructed her to make diagrams of basic anatomy and life cycles. Her attitude was great."
"Since the previous session, the student had gotten the results from his math test. He had done well and was able to raise his grade slightly. During the session, we covered more of the gas laws, specifically dealing with the Ideal Gas Law and Dalton's Law. He was able to get the problems done and demonstrated interest in future topics. He struggled with rearranging the Ideal Gas Law a bit, but was able to correct it on his own. In addition to the chemistry, we covered conversions to radians from degrees in Pre-Calculus. The only struggle was understanding the sub-degree measurements of minutes and seconds, but those are not commonly used. Leaving the session, I am confident he will continue to improve demonstrate it on future exams."
"The student and I reviewed for her midterm next week. We focused especially on aims 1-22 and discussed each topic in depth. She did really well. We also worked on practice problems for each aim. Next Monday I will bring a practice exam for us to work on and we will continue to review the remaining aims."
"The student's chemistry final is tomorrow, so we did a comprehensive review. We talked about stoichiometry, intermolecular forces, density, acids and bases, and gas laws, and molarity. The student thought the review was very helpful, and clarified concepts from earlier in the year that she had forgotten a bit. This will be the last time that we meet since the student's chemistry class will be over. It was a pleasure working with her, and I wish her the best of luck in the future!"
"In our first meeting, we covered Chapter 4 in the student's digital physics textbook. We briefly reviewed formulas and conceptual foundations of Forces and Newton's Laws before spending most of our time on the practice problems at the end of the chapter. We reviewed each problem step-by-step, and the student was able to solve most problems on her own after we worked through the strategy together. I think visualization of the concepts might be a particularly challenging part of problem-solving for the student as we begin (e.g. drawing out vector addition), but we will continue to work on reading the problems for the important given variables and setting up the solution through visualizations. The student has a great attitude toward the material and works hard as an active learner. I enjoyed working with her, and I'm looking forward to our next meeting on Thursday at 5-6:30pm when we will continue working on practice problems from the next unit."
"For this session we covered the whole unit of mechanical and electromagnetic waves. The student did not struggle with anything and she understood the material well. The student was very attentive and showed a desire to learn the material being taught. We also very briefly covered how to derive units, and we will continue that some more in the upcoming sessions. The student has good test scores from her class and with our future review sessions, she will be able to perform well on the physics exam."
