Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Met with the student and went over her math homework which involved finding summations of the first n terms in an arithmetic or geometric sequence as well as various other summation type problems. Also derived the general solutions for these types of problems so she could see where, for instance Sn=n*(a1+an)/2 comes from."
"This morning, the student and I reviewed absolute value and probability. We also reviewed how to solve long-division problems with decimals. We walked through one such problem, and then she solved it on her own. Overall, it was a good session. We will continue to work on solving equations using various operations during our next session."
"The student worked on fractions so that if he was given a fraction and then given a series of fractions with either the numerator or the denominator filled in he would complete the equivalent fraction. Then he worked on multiplying three digit numbers by two digit numbers, dividing three digit numbers by two digit numbers, and determining the place value of a ten digit number with five decimal places. He also worked on plot, theme, character, setting, and summary for two chapters in the Lemonade Wars book. Excellent session."
"The student and I spent some time talking about ways to help her focus and concentration at school. I challenged her to practice keeping her brain tuned in when her teacher was teaching. We worked on some story problems, one of which was very challenging. We had to formulate a plan, check for reasonableness, use a guess and check strategy, make a t-chart, review fractions, use multiplication... whew! It was fun! The best part was that the student was excited to go to school the next day and show her teacher. She said she hoped her work would be used as an example during class. I spent some time talking to her mom about any specific skills they would like me to work on. I also assessed her automatic recall of multiplication facts - she did great! She's such a nice young lady and I enjoy working with her!"
"Today we reviewed negative numbers and fractions. The student still missed a couple questions, but has improved his understanding quite a bit. We will continue to review negative numbers and fractions in future sessions. This session he worked through his homework as well as the rest of the week's problems on his spiral math worksheet. He had a good conceptual understanding of what the problems were asking of him."
"The students both completed their math online homework. We went over the questions one by one, addressing any confusion or concerns. I asked about the social studies work, but they were confident that it was very easy and neither of them desired any help. I spent the final ten minutes reading word problems, with the kids writing down an equation to match the sentence. They each made a few mistakes, so I would recommend reviewing the symbols chart in the textbook. We'll work on that in our next session."
