Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today's session was used to cover thermodynamics and amino acids. We discussed enthalpy, entropy, and Gibb's free energy. This meant that we had to cover energy coupling as well as how the equilibrium constant is related to the Gibbs's free energy change. We then proceeded to cover the zwitterion form of amino acids, as well as the isoelectric point, and how to predict it using pKa values. The student does great when provided with an example of a concept. I am going to attempt to provide an example for every major concept as simply reading off of the presentation does not assure that he understands the material. Using his homework assignments is an excellent way to confirm his understanding, so I plan to incorporate it into the end of our sessions. Next week will be used to cover any new material as well as review all previous concepts including acid/base chemistry, and polarity. * The man's name is Gibbs, not Gibb."
"The student and I covered questions dealing with both the center of mass and moments of inertia. He seemed to grasp the ideas; I wanted to emphasis the concepts of inertia (since that's what his class is learning about). We tried out a few different problems and he was able to identify the right way to solve each. On his final for the Fall semester, the student was able to get a C on his AP Physics final."
"Tonight we reviewed for her exam on Monday by studying viruses, bacteria, and genetics. She currently has a 98% in the class and I am confident that she will do well on the upcoming exam. She understands the concepts well and has a good study plan for this weekend."
"The student worked on her latest homework assignment that covered a few different physics topics. Some of the examples given in class matched the homework problems, but there were a few that required a bit more mental gymnastics to get through. There are still some questions that we need to complete, and she said she understood how to do the ones she had completed before she and I started working together. Some of what we went over was still a little fuzzy for her, so she said she was going to take some of the rest of the day to review it all."
"We had a LOT to review with respect to Binomial Theory and vectors, but we got through it. While the student struggled with the material in the beginning, he was able to understand the material by the end. I hope that the student will continue the rest of his academic life with the new found knowledge that taking notes from the textbook really helps, and that going over problems from the textbook will help reinforce what he learns!"
"The student and I finished the assignment on the erosion of Florida's beaches. We also started and finished the project on waves, tides, and currents. The student did a really great job with both assignments, and I felt like she was able to truly grasp all of the concepts from the waves, tides, and currents chapter in the textbook. We went over the information together with lots of examples, and she was able to recall most of it without having to look back over the material for the project."
