Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We began by going over the practice test she did since our last meeting. She did very well, scoring a 35 on Math, Science and English and a 29 on Reading. Since Reading was her lowest score, we focused on that throughout our session and she will continue working on that on her own between now and our lesson on Wednesday."
"The student and I went through the ACT Reading test today. We covered the types of passages and questions, and how to approach each. We also went through practice passages together. She struggled with the first few passages, but she definitely picked it up as we went along. Monday we will go through her math homework and discuss writing."
"The student and I went over English today. She improved a lot since the beginning. However, she still sometimes has trouble getting the right answer after arriving at the last two answer choices. I have assigned her problems to practice on. We went over a little bit, but I think it's fine. I wanted her to understand everything."
"Review of writing prompt on school dress code and scoring rubric for writing prompt. Discussion of refinements required to move writing from 2-3 range to at least a 4. Assigned a new writing prompt to complete with more care, better organization and development of ideas."
"The student did fairly well on her first essay attempt, but we discussed how she could add more detail without losing time. We also ran an abridged ACT today. She handled the English, Reading, and Science sections without much issue, but struggled a bit with Math. After going over the missed problems, I gave her some extra help with logarithms, percentages, and circles. She will complete another practice test for our final session tomorrow."
"We began by continuing with the essay we started last time. We worked on the introduction and conclusion, focusing on making a hook and not sounding too general. We moved onto the science section that the student finished between sessions, but since she got all of the questions right we quickly moved on to math. We worked on the math section of the first practice test, splitting it up into 10 minute sections. We focused on not making small errors and time management. She will complete the science section and the essay for the next practice test before our next session."
"We covered an ACT Critical Reading practice test. He did well. He is assigned homework to finish all of the tests for practice test one by our next meeting next week. Continued vocabulary review."
"Today we drilled the Reading and Science portions of the exam after discussing questions that came up on the math practice. No concerns to report. The student is performing at the high 20/low 30 range based on composite score estimates."
"The student completed English, reading, and part of a science test for today. We talked through both English and reading tests and I gave her some more strategies for both tests. We did some science review and helped finish the science test and talk through the answers."
"Today was my last session with the student. We did a bit of each section and graded it. In the English section, I encourage her to read it aloud in her head and take careful notice of commas. Her strongest section is math and I believe she will do very well on that section. For the reading section, she still needs to work on her timing in reading and look at the whole passage for answering topic/theme-based sections. Finally, the science section is a tough one but I believe she will do well as long as she takes her time with each question."
"Student #1 and student #2 worked through a science test and did much better than their previous exams in addition to working through a reading passage. Student #1 improved in reading. I told both of them to keep practicing problems until our final session on Friday."
"In this session we covered science, math, and English. We began with science, going over the questions and coming up with useful strategies. He knows he needs to complete each passage in the science section in about 4 and a half minutes and we discussed what to underline in the questions. In the English section, we observed that the important thing he needs to work on is maintaining details in the passage as well as checking for comma rules. Finally, he is pretty solid in math. We concluded the session by talking about the essay. For next time, he's going to complete practice tests from prep book. He get's 5 stars because he completed all his homework!"
