Tutoring review by Diane in South Charleston, OH
Today the student told me she has a Biology test tomorrow and the teacher had given her a review packet. We answered all the questions and I quizzed her on specific vocabulary terms like: Interphase, Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, Telophase, and Cytokinesis. We discussed components of DNA. Why cells must replicate and study skills like using key words in the questions to help pick the right answer. She said the test is on a scantron with specific one or two sentence responses to questions. She said she would work on the vocabulary for the test tomorrow. She and I looked at the PowerPoint given in class but she still needs code for the online textbook.

I am going to put together some problems for her to work on during the week that will help her identify when to use the different calculus rules. Hopefully, being more familiar with when to use the rules will make her more confident in the calculus portion of these problems. She really must memorize all the rules for solving derivatives, especially the more complex ones, like the product, quotient, and chain rule if she is going to become more confident and successful in this class. Hopefully daily practice will help with this.

Items covered: Math -Adding integers Spanish -Subject pronouns -Using the verb gustar Social Studies -Current Events: Earthquake in Chile/Peru creates tsunami threat This session we reviewed the student's homework assignments. Spanish seems to be an easy topic for him, especially with it being beginner material. We reviewed his math course agenda and will review topics in alignment with the course schedule. One thing we will pay attention to improving is his writing abilities. We will focus on making sure he writes in a formal tone instead of as leisurely conversation. His confidence in knowing the material is a plus.

Tutoring review by Hannah in South Charleston, OH
We worked through the student's pre-calc practice quizzes for his quiz tomorrow. He was able to do all but two problems without help, so he definitely knows the material well and should be able to do well on the quiz. I left him with practice problems to review in the morning before his quiz if he feels like he needs to study more. The teacher hadn't posted the answer keys to the practice quizzes, but I checked his answers and they were correct, with the exception of the two that he missed. He said he would ask his teacher before the quiz and check his answers with his classmates to compare and make sure they all got the same thing.

Tutoring review by Joanna in South Charleston, OH
Today I taught the student more on quadratics; specifically the discriminant and complex numbers. I went over why the discriminant is important and what information it gives about roots, then went into how to work with imaginary numbers when they come up. We went over rationalizing, finding absolute value, and exponents of imaginary numbers. We also reviewed what we had gone over about quadratics last week, including the different forms of equations for parabolas, factoring by grouping, and finding the vertex. We only have 1 unit left to work on: polynomials. Overall, I think we will have 2-3 sessions left altogether until she is ready to take her placement test in school to advance.
