Tutoring review by Jacqueline in Civic Center, CA
Today we continued part 2 of the chapter test packet. I reviewed subtraction with regrouping and rounding place values. Then the student was able to complete the problems on her own. Then we also completed a worksheet from a standard assessment review packet.

The student, in preparation for his upcoming exam, worked on a review packet over the chapter as well as the chapter test from the text book. We focused on using the various methods, the process of elimination, substitution, and graphing to solve linear systems of equations involving two variables. Both the packet and chapter test provided ample review material, the book having many work problems that are applications solving systems of equations. The word problems involved not only solving a system but writing the equations about interest or growth.

The student did very well today! We worked on geometry word problems. We reviewed how to find area of all of the shapes, and she remembered how to find area once I reminded her of the formulas. We practiced finding the area of shapes on a graph, with pictures, and in word problems. She was able to find all of them after a little practice! We also worked on finding the area of regular polygons, and she learned that very quickly as well! I think next session we will do more word problems and then move onto surface area.

The student did very well today. He solved every problem correctly. I helped him realize that the LA = CS / 2 formula comes from the fact that a cone is like a pyramid with infinite faces, wherein each triangle is BH/2 and you multiply by the number of faces.

Yesterday the student and I continued with solving multi-step algebraic equations. Today the equations involved distributing in addition to simply adding and subtracting like terms. There were two main things we talked about and went over while working through the problems. 1) when distributing a number outside of parentheses across the inside, you need to multiply it by each and every term within the parentheses. Overall he is doing well with solving these equations! We also got a bit of practice in setting up the equation from a word problem. If he is up for it, I would like to do more practice with these word problems on Monday and really get him comfortable with taking slow and careful steps to figure them out.

Tutoring review by Alex in Civic Center, CA
Today I introduced the concepts of percents and how to convert fractions and decimals into percents. The student struggled at first but then really start to grasp the concept a lot more. I didn't leave any practice this time because I think she needs more guidance until she can work some on her own. Overall, it was a great session and she did a great job staying engaged throughout the entire time.
