Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I focused on math during this session. She was extremely concerned about her "lack of math skills" but she did not do as poorly as she seemed to anticipate. We definitely need to practice the quantitative comparisons a lot so that she can see a pattern in what she needs to do to each quantity to decide how they compare/relate."
"We went over the student's results on the diagnostic test, and came up with areas she needs to focus on. These include: reviewing properties of triangles and circles and rules about angles; practicing setting up and solving equations, as well as solving percentage problems (particularly the ones with complicated prompts). We also discussed techniques for vocabulary review."
"Because our last session had involved work in the writing and reading section, I wanted to focus more heavily on math for this session. We began by reviewing how to manipulate inequalities, tackling several online practice questions. Then we finished the last part of our first math section, reviewing the plugging-in-numbers and plugging-in-answers strategies and how to recognize opportunities to apply them. She then completed a practice section over-viewing the concepts that we covered over the last few weeks."
"Today I continued to help the student push through a large sample of practice problems for the quantitative section of the practice test. We got through the first sample test and completed the full spectrum of problems including graphs, tables, figures, and percentages."
"The student and I covered Text Completions and Sentence Equivalence questions, going over general strategies such as comparing 2 or 3 options for subtleties in meaning. It seems like he knows the strategies fairly well, and the best thing to do is just keep practicing aloud with him, going through practice questions. This will acclimate him further to the choices he ought to make in going through the questions. Intense vocab studying is a must. We will try to find new books to study off of, since he's completed our two."
"We worked on practice MCAT passages that the student sent me on a variety of different topics, including protein structure and function, viruses, fluids, and replication/ transcription. Overall, she had the most trouble with the fluids passages and knowing when and how to apply the continuity equation of fluids. She had a bit of a difficult time as well on the protein passage, but this was understandable because the level of this passage was toward the more difficult end of what she would expect on the actual test. After going through the passages today, she appeared to understand most of them with a bit of exception toward the fluids passage, which she still needs to review her content on. We will continue to work on that."
