Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today the student and I reviewed the website portion of his English assignment. We spent the session writing out and organizing the text that would be included on the website. He did a great job thinking of words today and remembered to vary his sentences. There were a few occasions in which he wrote run-ons, but he usually noticed his error and edited the sentence shortly after writing it. He used me as a sounding board today, which worked very well for him."
"I looked over the student's homework and had him do a worksheet on paragraph unity, which we discussed. Then I wrote an "academic paragraph" format for him that is consistent with his teacher's requirements for paragraphs in his school essays. For homework I asked him to use the paragraph format to write an academic paragraph on the topic he had chosen on his previous homework."
"Worked with the student to work on another free response AP physics B test. She had fewer hiccups on this test and was better able to work her way through the problems on her own without any help from me."
"This week, the student and I worked through problems regarding Newton's Second Law. The student has been doing well, and we were working ahead in his College Physics curriculum. This week, he will have a test, and there will only be review, so I anticipate that next week will be more working ahead, unless he has problems on the test. "
"Covered how to write equations in slope-intercept, point-slope, and standard form. Also covered how to work slope questions within word problems. He has improved greatly in working with decimals and fractions. "
"Decided to focus on vocabulary for the two remaining sessions, so I provided three different vocabulary-building activities and we rotated between them (twice each): listening for new words in context, building word-webs to use prefixes and suffixes in new words, and adding new words to a word bank with personalized examples."
"We studied for the student's math quiz. She is beginning to learn entry level calculus. After our session I believe she understood the material and will do well on her quiz."
"The student and I worked on his latest homework assignment. He is learning about circles and their equations. We had to write the equation of a circle given the center, the radius, and the graph of the circle. All of the concepts he had been learning are being pulled together. We worked on a few problems that required the use of the distance formula and midpoint formula which tied everything together perfectly. It really helped him to see the whole point of the concept he was learning. His skills are getting better."
"The student and I focused on reading comprehension and writing this time. Since we had reviewed all of his most recent practice test, we began working together through another set of sample questions. For reading comprehension, we reviewed a few tips, and he practiced underlining phrases and making short notes next to the passage. As we reviewed vocabulary, he continued to add to a list of words to review, which we referred back to over the course of our session."
"The student and I worked on reading comprehension at this session. She read a passage that is typical of reading standardized test material and we worked through 10 questions related to the passage together. We also discussed study strategies and a study plan in order to improve her study skills. I left her with the task of creating a study schedule where 4 hours a night is dedicated to studying each of her 4 major subjects. I instructed her to set a time for 50 minutes and then at the end of her 50 minutes to take a 10 minute break. We will discuss how this worked at our next session. "
"This session we covered all of the basics of computer science so that the student will get used to writing code for the written portion of the AP computer science practice exam. After he practiced writing simple programs we moved to loops and arrays. We practiced stepping through arrays and two dimensional arrays, and after writing a few programs to demonstrate how they work we answered a few multiple choice questions from the AP practice exam."
"The student and I did a general overview of some topics from the first half of this year in preparation for mid-year exams. Some of the topics we went over were mitosis, DNA replication/transcription/translation, cell structure and cellular respiration. We will continue reviewing on Wednesday."
