Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We started the session by doing some drills and after a while it seemed that he was comfortable with them. Later on we started solving some word problems involving fractions but it became impossible to verify his understanding of the subject because a lot of time had to be spent going over old material that he is expected to know. I agreed with the student's mother to contact his teacher directly and ask him what I should focus on during our upcoming sessions, although it seems clear that a lot of drilling will need to be done. At the end of the class he explained to me several logical problems that his math teacher posed to him and he understands them perfectly and is also able to explain them properly. He is very good with logic but needs to cover a lot of background material."
"During this session, we reviewed multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction. He is comfortable with all of those areas. We will work on fractions next session."
"This was my first session with the student. We worked on her homework which was partially about math with money and partially about adding numbers, specifically focused on recognition of the hundreds, tens and ones places. She seems to have an understanding of the concepts she is being taught, and we will review her basic math skills so that we can move on to more advanced concepts. She will need some practice with basic addition and subtraction in order for her to move forward. I discussed working on this in between sessions with her mother."
"We started by going over the student's geography class work. She seemed to be understanding this better, but still needed help with understanding exactly what the question was asking sometimes. I worked with her on this, and will continue to do so in future sessions. We then worked on antonyms. She knew that a synonym meant words that were the same, but did not know what antonyms were. Once I explained the difference, she was successfully able to complete the activity we did. We then finished her multiplication picture that we started a couple of weeks ago. She is doing better with her facts, but still needs work on 7's and 8's. We will continue to work on this."
"The student and I worked on her ability to solve fraction word problems. She was very good at reading the problems and understanding what operation she needed to use, but she needed help on the follow through with the fractions. I worked with her on drawing models of what is happening in the problem and this seemed to help her immensely. We also worked on how she can add and subtract mixed numbers."
"We spent this sessions reviewing spelling and math. I started by asking the student to spell her 10 weekly spelling words from memory. We made changes together and then she copied her spelling words three times each. Next, she was asked to write full sentences that used her spelling words and make no spelling errors. The only mistake she made was misspelling "caught" as "cought." I had her write "caught" three more times. We then did multiplication practices pages with numbers 6-9, and two sets of division. Next session we will begin work with fractions."
