Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today was my last session with the student before she takes the ACT next Saturday. We will continue to work together to prepare her for the SAT next month. She is feeling confident--she took a practice Science test before I arrived, and got a score of 31. We practiced a bit of Reading and English, and worked through her answers together. We talked about some strategies for the day of the test. She wanted to know the rubrics for the Writing portion of the test, so we talked about that and then she wrote a practice essay which I graded and discussed with her. I am confident that she will do well on the ACT next weekend."
"During this session, the student finished the science section that we started last week. He is very strong in his science analysis already. We continued to practice interpreting graphs, and I demonstrated how to solve one problem using the formula Distance=(rate)(time). We then moved on to an English section. He has a very firm grasp of basic grammatical concepts, and he made very few errors. The main type of question that he had difficulty with were paragraph improvement questions. We discussed strategies for these problems, including looking for key words in the sentence that indicate relationship to surrounding sentences. We also reviewed eliminating the passive voice and identifying dangling modifiers. Next week, he will finish the English section and start the reading comprehension section."
"Reviewed the test English and reading sections. The student was outstanding in English, answering 72/75 questions correctly. We reviewed punctuation rules, including when to use commas and semi-colons for subordinate and independent clauses. She is steadily improving in the reading section and is no longer intimidated by the social science passage."
