Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"During this session, the student and I focused on a mathematics section of the SAT. We decided to work through the problems together and almost finished one section of problems before our time was through. Her reasoning skills are there, but would benefit from more practice to sharpen up her ability to determine what to do first, second, etc. She will benefit from repetition of these math skills."
"The student and I began the session by discussing his reading from the past week. We then began to compile a list of common rhetorical device as a part of our project on close reading. He and I worked on the parts of speech with a fun activity. After that, we did a page from a reading detective book that sought to increase reading comprehension."
"Today we spent most of the time reviewing another SAT practice essay that the student did over the winter break. One of the main areas of improvement that I pointed out was that he often simply repeats himself in an attempt to add length but ends up sounding redundant. After I pointed it out, he worked hard not to continue to do this."
"I assessed the level of the student and covered the alphabet. Then we went on learning about a few basic expressions and some household items. At the end the session we talked about schedules and future lesson plans."
"The student and I worked on his use of run-on sentences. We practiced fixing some sentences and revising a piece of writing. We also worked on differentiating active and passive voice. He then wrote a short essay using all of the skills we have worked on so far."
"The student worked on her homework. She had a little difficulty with irregular verbs. She struggled to know when to use the past tense or past participle (after has, had, have). With math, she did very well with doubling a known fact. She only struggled with the 2-step word problem. When she needs to determine which numbers to use which operation with, it is still challenging. We'll work on that in our next session."
