Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"At this session, the student was excited to share what had happened in the second book in the series she has been reading, Sea of Monsters. As she summarized the plot so far, I stopped her several times to check on specific details about what has happened and where in the book these events are described. We focused on a conversation between the main character and his mother, and I asked her to describe how the mother is feeling, then find examples in the text to support this. We particularly focused on finding "hints" about how the mother is feeling that were not in the dialogue itself. We also focused on a scene in the chapter "I Play Dodgeball with Cannibals," to find context clues for the meaning of the word "cannibal." I recommended that she might benefit from having a dictionary at home."
"We did both reading and spelling. For the reading, I had him start a new book about dinosaurs and complete exercises on the first three chapters, which he had read. He did well on the reading aloud and on the exercises. Next, we reviewed the previous spelling lesson, and the student took a quiz on the four words he did not know well; he had three correct and one that we will revisit. Then, we started a new unit. We didn't have time to finish its exercises but will begin with it next session. He remains very good humored, positive about his work and always applies himself."
"Today, the student and I went through most of her homework. For review, she had a word search activity. We also spent some time doing reading comprehension and proofreading sentences. Next, we did a math review that covered everything she's been doing in math-- adding numbers in the 100's, rounding and estimating, fractions, multiplication, division. We finished off the session with a review of her spelling words. I did instruct her to practice again before her test."
