Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"For our session, I began by giving the student 12 multiplication problems and timing her. She did about the same as last week. Afterward, we played a memory multiplication game. I wrote multiplication facts on slips of paper and the answers on other slips of paper. We used the equations and answers to play memory. She did a great job and won the game. Her mom asked me to work on some English writing and how to use a Thesaurus with the student. I discussed what synonyms and antonyms are and how to find words in the thesaurus. She caught on quickly, so we discussed her writing assignment. To help her get started we read an article, and I helped her to pick out key details. I showed her why some information is more important than other information while reading. She did a great job picking out five important facts for her writing assignment on Jane Goodall. For practice, I asked her to work on some multiplication games on a math learning tool website."
"Covered changing improper fractions to mixed numbers and vice versa; reviewed test questions and completed additional practice problems."
"We went over her comprehension of simple addition problems. We used flashcards. By the end of the lesson she was able to get over 90% correct in 5 min."
"Today, we covered some fraction simplification and word problems, but mostly long division. I also tested her multiplication and it is a piece of cake to her now. The word problems we did today were kind of unusual. After that she focused on long division really well and is able to do problems almost completely on her own. I want to work with her more on simplifying fractions before she does it on her own."
"In this session we worked on word problems and decoding graphs. As the student works i remind him constantly to make sure he takes everything into account. He is a very skilled student, and just needs to slow down a little."
"We worked a fair amount on counting and number sense (all well as writing numbers) during math. One of the ways we've been working with number sense is to cover up a number I'll have him tell me what it is. It's definitely still a skill that needs work but it will come with time. I noticed a significant improvement in his number writing since the last time we did a significant amount of it. In terms of sound recognition, he can tell me the sound that every letter makes but not necessarily its name or a word to apply it to. However, there's been a notable improvement in a lot of the tricky consonants."
