Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student did a good job writing his assigned essay on medicine. He did a good job of staying focused and transition from one idea to another. I then did a lesson on parenthetic expressions and commas. By the end of the lesson, he was able to identify what the parenthetic expression was and when it should be set off by commas. Next I had him write a two-page paper on his favorite season. I then had him immediately write a one-page paper on something that happened in the past (all past tense). I then reviewed both papers. He wrote a good paper on his favorite season - summer. He was able to identify some parenthetic expressions as well as some hyphenated adjectives, which we had discussed at the last lesson, which shows improvement and his willingness to learn. His second paper also used parenthetic expressions correctly. For next time, he is supposed to write a 4-5 page persuasive paper (not researched!) on which team is the best basketball team and why. I told him that I want to be convinced. I spoke with his mom for a few minutes at the end of the lesson, and she thinks a short grammar lesson during each session is appropriate, which is great. I think this will be a great way to help his writing as well as help him prepare for the college entrance exam."
"The student and I reviewed his journals and vocabulary lessons. We are starting to work on a long creative story and will focus on grammar principles next time."
"Did some diagnostic test work to see what we need to focus on. Started working through a GED Language Arts book, specifically focusing on sentence structure and nouns. HW: "Why I Want a Writing Tutor" essay, watch SCHOOLHOUSE ROCK! Good class, I was pleased to hear that stuff we did during that first meeting has had an immediate positive effect in the student's life!"
