Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student is working hard and he takes deadlines seriously, which shows that he understands the responsibility of doing his work. We worked on his reading assignment for school. We read another book that he has read before. I would really like to have him read a book to me that he hasn't read before, so that I can get a better gauge on his progress."
"In today's session, the student read four books he picked out. He did very well reading all of the books. We reviewed the vocabulary that was unfamiliar to him as we read. I would explain what the word meant, and when possible, would give an example or show him an example, which included words like "wink," "stretched," "sportsmanship," "team captain," etc. For two of the stories, I asked questions during and after reading to check for comprehension. His answers were usually pretty short, though he would provide a pretty good answer."
"We read his weekly story and discussed the genre of folk tales where cultures create explanations for things that happen in nature. I used the review/comprehension questions to help guide and clarify his reading. Then we worked on his homework and discussed the slight differences between words like shimmering, brilliant, and gleaming. We also discussed generalizations (always, never, usually) and identifying them within text."
